Emirates ID Reduces Per Capita Carbon Footprint |
|
The Emirates Identity Authority has revealed that it was able to reduce the per capita carbon footprint in all its permanent centres across the country to seven tons.
This emerged in a study jointly done by the Authority with Masdar. The Emirates ID said the result of the study must be seen in the context of its continuous efforts to strengthen environmental consciousness among its staff as well as to integrate sustainability as a central concept in the implementation of all its projects and initiatives.
"We are committed to contributing effectively to the achievement of the UAE's Vision 2021 and the country's strategy for green development. Our 2014-2016 strategic plan envisages a number of initiatives in environmental sustainability, with green buildings, green technologies and conservation of natural resources being its pivotal aspects. A host of measures are in place to optimize the use of electricity and water such as using LED units across its premises and improved treatment of cooling gas," the Emirates ID said in a statement.
The Authority also drew attention to the measures it has taken to optimise the consumption of water. "The installation of devices to optimize the use of water in tapes, less water-intensive plants, modern irrigation techniques and other measures reduce the use of water. Reduction and recycling of waste is another significant step taken in this context. We approach the issue of sustainability not merely from a corporate social responsibility perspective, but from a holistic perspective that brings these issues into the core of our organizational concerns," it added.
The Emirates ID was able to reduce by 50% by the middle of this year the carbon footprint in its smart identity card projects. Its current strategic plan aims to bring it down further to 70% during the year 2015. An agreement between Masdar and the Emirates ID for cooperation is aimed at taking advantage of the former's expertise in the areas of sustainability for the greater common good.
